IT professionals are still gun-shy about leveraging cloud computing solutions due to security concerns, according to a vendor survey.
Asked what are the key challenges to their organizations’ adoption of cloud, 76 per cent of respondents said security first, followed by compliance at 43 per cent. Lack of expertise was third at 37 per cent, followed by system control, lack of resources and cloud service management.

That was one of the results of the global survey of almost 700 infosec staffers released by Heat Software of Milpitas, Calif., which makes endpoint management and IT service management solutions.
Similarly, when asked about their concerns over mobile applications 76 per cent said security was number one. That was followed by application stability (39 per cent) and user satisfaction (34 per cent).
Heat Software was formed last year from the mergers of FrontRange Systems and Lumesion Security Inc. Later it bought the client and enterprise mobility management IT service management software from Absolve Software Corp.
“What was most surprising to me was given that so many technologies are shifting to the cloud and so many new apps are being adopted by the enterprise through cloud hosted applications there is still a large number of customers that are managing their endpoint environments through on-premise solutions,” said Russ Ernst, senior director of product management Heat Software.
“That will change, but that’s why I was surprised — I was expecting that to shift towards the cloud.”
He was also surprised 37 per cent of respondents said their organizations don’t use an enterprise mobile management solution. That included 25 per cent of enterprise-sized firms and 58 percent of small businesses. (However, they might have been using mobile device management software, which is seen by some a separate category. Of those using an EMM solution, 50 per cent said it was being used for mobile device management, with another 42 per cent saying it was used for application management.)
“Mobile device coming into the enterprise has been happening for the past eight years,” he pointed out. The fact that almost 40 per cent don’t use an enterprise mobility management solution is significant, he said.
