VoIP poses risk for teleworkers

Enterprises have been warned to avoid IP telephony for teleworking staff. While tweaking firewalls for premium VoIP traffic allows easier remote access in a telework environment, it can also create a potential security hole in the network. Hackers can access a network by locating the address of VoIP Web servers on Google or by scanning for commonalities in mail server protection lists, said Neil Wise, a director at security firm Assurance Pty. Ltd. Users who leave default answering messages are similarly vulnerable, according to David Endler, director of security research at 3Com Corp.’s Tipping Point, as it allows hackers to identify a phones’ make and model.

RFID tracks lost tapes

Imation Corp. has announced a new tracking technology that could potentially put an end to the problem of lost data tapes by using passive RFID tags and GPS tracking systems to remotely locate cartridges wherever they are. Imation will begin shipping its RFID tape tracking technology, DataGuard rf Tape Tracking System, in April. The technology embeds RFID chips in standard tape cartridge labels, allowing them to be scanned either individually with a handheld device or by placing cases with up to 20 tapes inside on a scanning pad. While the GPS tracking system will not be part of the initial product launch next month, Imation plans to announce its availability over the next two months.
