The next generation of search-and-rescue workers looking for victims in buildings that collapsed in earthquakes or explosions will slither through eight-inch ducts, navigate dark, rubble-strewn corridors and be tossed through third-floor windows. They will be impervious to pain, fire and water. They will be robots – autonomous and mobile.
