Major open source vendors including Red Hat and Canonical, which makes Ubuntu, said they are incorporating open source Java technology from Sun Microsystems in their Linux operating system and server products.
The implementation of OpenJDK will include Red Hat’s Fedora 9 and Ubuntu’s 8.04 Long Term Support Server and Desktop editions, Sun said. The company’s integrated development environment, NetBeans 6.0, will also be in the Ubuntu release.
Sun said the partnerships mean developers using the Red Hat and Canonical products can use open source Java to build Web-based applications for enterprise customers, and could place its technology within the core of popular Linux distributions.
