Ontario still high-tech mecca; Quebec, B.C. gaining

Ontario is still home to the top high-tech enterprises in the country, but Quebec and British Columbia are gaining, according to a survey from a consultant firm.

“The Canadian Technology Fast 50” finalist list, compiled by the Toronto-based Canadian arm of Deloitte & Touche, included 16 tech companies from Ontario, 14 from Quebec and 12 from B.C. The list ranks the 50 fastest-growing technology companies based on the highest rates of revenue growth over the last five years. The enterprises, both public and private, are from various sectors, including networking, Internet communications, software, life sciences, semiconductors and computer peripherals.

The final ranking for the 2002 Deloitte & Touche Canadian Technology Fast 50 winners will be announced on Sept. 25.

The list shows Ontario’s dominance shrank drastically down from 25 enterprises in 2001. Both Quebec and B.C. gained over 2001 with increases by eight and two companies respectively.

Tech companies based in Newfoundland and New Brunswick made the list for the first time.

Quebec-based BCE Emergis and Ontario-based Research in Motion have both made the annual list since its inception in 1998. Almost one-third of the companies listed are appearing for their second time or more.
