Online gaming firm targets Baby Boomers

Web-based gaming destination WorldWinner Inc. (www.worldwinner.com) said it is trying to attract a slightly older crowd by partnering with ThirdAge Inc., a Web-based media and direct marketing company focused on serving the aging Baby Boomer market and those who want to build a relationship with them.

According to ThirdAge, Baby Boomers — those born between 1946 and 1964 — are leaving the traditional image of “middle-age” in the dust and redefining what it means to get older by showing interest in online games. The partnership, said WorldWinner, will finally give ThirdAge members a chance to play their favourite games online.

So what kinds of games do Boomers prefer anyway? WorldWinner thinks its site will be a hit with this demographic because of the nature of the games it offers on its Web site. Games traditionally played in person, such as backgammon, spades, bridge and chess, are popular with folks in their mid-40s to mid-60s, the firm said. Now, whenever that desire for competition kicks in, all they have to do is get online and they can be certain they will find willing opponents.

“More consumers over the age of 40 are turning to the Internet to enjoy the games they once played at the kitchen table or at the community centre,” said Stephen Killeen, president and CEO of WorldWinner in a statement. Players will now be able to demonstrate their skills at popular online favourites like hearts and solitaire, while connecting with other members of the WorldWinner community.

The trend towards Boomers’ interest in online gaming continues to rise, WorldWinner said. According to the Pew Internet & American study on Internet usage, 42 million Americans are online game players, equally popular for men and women, and surprisingly also for those over 50.

In other exciting news, WorldWinner also announced that it would acquire e-bridge, an online entertainment site for bridge enthusiasts.

Through the acquisition, WorldWinner said it would add bridge — another Baby Boomer favourite — to its catalogue of games. Bridge players of all levels visit e-bridge to play, learn more about bridge and be able to share their passion for the game.
