Taking its first significant step into the corporate PC sphere, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) announced Monday that NEC Corp. will manufacture and sell computers incorporating AMD processors to corporate customers in Europe.
Japan’s NEC has decided to use AMD’s top product Athlon and its budget chip Duron in a line of PowerMate DT computers. NEC will target the desktop PCs at large enterprise and government markets, initially in the U.K., France, Italy and the Netherlands, AMD said in a statement.
AMD said the systems will be available immediately, but had no information on pricing.
The company has yet to land a design win for the corporate market with a major U.S. PC manufacturer; rival Intel Corp. dominates that market. AMD’s chips are, however, used widely in consumer products.
In Europe AMD already have relationships in the corporate market with Italy’s Olivetti SpA and Germany’s Maxdata AG, a spokesman for AMD said.
