NAI broadens intrusion prevention portfolio

Building on its existing IntruShield intrusion detection family of products, Network Associates Inc. on Monday took the suite a step further and introduced extended functionality for the small- and medium-sized business (SMB) and branch office market.

The new McAfee IntruShield 1200 integrates network intrusion detection and prevention in one appliance, thus lowering capital costs, NAI said. The tool offers centralized Web-based monitoring and bulk intrusion policy management and essentially offers a plug-and-play installation of sensor appliances, while eliminating labour-intensive operating system hardening and patch management for sensors at distributed sites, the company added.

Built on the McAfee IntruShield 4000 technology, IntruShield 1200 incorporates denial of service detection and offers deep-packet traffic analysis and virtual IDS features for intrusion policy management. The IntruSheild 4000 is designed for deployment at the core of enterprise networks and offers a performance of 2Gbps.

In addition to its IntruSheild announcement, NAI introduced the McAfee Entercept 4.1 host-based system intrusion prevention software. According to the company, Entercept 4.1 offers enterprise-class intrusion prevention and streamlined server security management.

The new version comes with enhanced security features including improved signature groupings to enable users to better prioritize protection against attacks, and enhanced configuration, allowing users to select any port for SSL communication. NAI added that the software integrates seamlessly with other applications through SNMP and a pre-compiled Management Information Base.

Entercept 4.1 is available immediately for online download, and will ship July 18. The IntruSheild 1200 solution will be available August 15. For more information, visit the company online at www.nai.com.
