Mobile biometrics and enterprise authentication

There are lots of practical uses in the enterprise for smart phones and tablets, including checking email and showing product images to customers.

But their screen sizes and processing power may make them ideal for security authorization through biometrics.

As this article from Network Computing points out, they may make dandy mobile fingerprint readers or voice authorization processors for securely linking to corporate networks.

The story does point out there are certain obstacles to overcome: Few existing mobile devices have biometric capabilities built-in. A number of companies – including at least one Canadian firm – make fingerprint modules that can be attached to smart phones and tablets, but ideally the scanner would be built into mobile devices. And corporate software and business processes will have to be changed.

But the concept does raise a number of possibilities
