Lufthansa AG is to make the Connexion by Boeing in-flight broadband Internet access service available to its passengers, the airline announced on Monday.
Lufthansa is the fourth airline to say it will offer the planned Connexion by Boeing service, and the first airline outside the U.S. It joins United Airlines Inc., American Airlines Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc., which last week announced plans to make the service available to their passengers from mid-2002.
In addition to offering the service to their passengers, United, American and Delta are also joint-venture partners with The Boeing Co. in the Connexion by Boeing service.
Billed as a “flying office,” Connexion by Boeing will offer airline passengers access to two-way broadband e-mail, the Internet, corporate intranets, live television and other entertainment services via satellites.
Lufthansa plans to conduct a three-month test of the service on one of its Boeing 747 jumbo jets before rolling it out to other aircraft in its fleet, according to a statement released by the airline. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
