Lucent roams between WLAN and 3G

Lucent Technologies Inc. has successfully demonstrated roaming between a wireless LAN (WLAN) and a 3G (third-generation) mobile broadband network, the company announced Wednesday.

The Murray Hill, N.J., manufacturer of telecommunications performed a seamless handoff of a wireless data call from a WLAN to a 3G network, it said in a statement.

The company has also executed a seamless handoff between a WLAN and CDMA2000 (Code Division Multiple Access) network, it said.

With such roaming capability, users will be able to browse the Internet while moving between two different types of networks with no interruption in the session.

For the WLAN-3G test, Lucent used its own 3G network and a notebook PC equipped with a 3G test phone, a 802.11 WLAN card from Proxim Corp. and roaming gateway software from ipUnplugged AB.
