Israeli chipmaker releases new mobile WiMAX processor

Altair Semiconductor has released a mobile WiMAX baseband processor to handheld device and mobile manufacturers. The company said its ALT2150 is the world’s smallest and most power-efficient mobile WiMAX processor, which implements full WiMAX forum Wave-2 physical layer and media access control functionality.

“The ALT2150 is not just another WiMAX baseband processor,” said Eran Eshed, the company’s co-founder and vice-president of marketing. “It represents a true disruption in terms of power consumption, size and cost.

The 7×7 milimetre chip is the first in a family the company will be releasing which Altair says will consume a fraction of the power of mobile WiMAX chipsets from other makers.

It also says an ALT2150-based device will consume less power than an equivalent solution using High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) or Evolution Data Optimized (EDO) technology.
