Interview with Ann Cavoukian: privacy, smart grids, best practices

The Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner, in partnership with Toronto Hydro Corp. and Hydro One Inc., released best practices for protecting privacy on smart grids Wednesday. Targeted to utility companies, the document intends to provide a solution to the privacy issue, before it becomes a problem.

Privacy by Design: Achieving the Gold Standard in Data Protection for the Smart Grid outlines exactly how to embed privacy into the architecture of smart grids, said Cavoukian in an interview with ComputerWorld Canada. “We’ve taken the guesswork out of it and created best practices that will show you how to do it. This is the gold standard,” she said.

Cavoukian believes the best practice document will benefit utility companies around the world. “Other utilities can just use the benchmarks we’ve created and apply it to their own circumstances,” she said. The document adheres to Fair Information Practices and Cavoukian’s own Privacy by Design concept.
