International news briefs: US department laptop stolen, again

The inspector general’s office at the U.S. Department ofTransportation disclosed that a laptop PC containing the names,addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers of 133,000Florida residents was stolen from a car in Doral, Fla., on July27.

The inspector general’s office said it is taking steps to ensurethat no other portable devices contain personal data and istightening its policies regarding the use of laptops.

Massachusetts CIO Louis Gutierrez said Friday that the state’sIT division had laid off 27 contract employees as part of ashutdown of work on bond-dependent IT projects. The statelegislature ended its session for the year on July 31 withoutapproving a bond bill that included US$250 million (C$281) for ITinitiatives. Leaders of the Massachusetts House and Senate saidthey’re working to arrange a special legislative session to addressthe bill.

The U.S. Department of Justice is considering amassive consolidation of its storage systems that would linkdevices at more than 2,000 offices and multiple data centers intoan enterprise storage architecture. According to a documentobtained by Computerworld, the DOJ last week began solicitingvendors “to identify solutions, technologies, and best practices”for interconnecting its storage infrastructure.

Cisco Systems Inc. said it has invested US$50 million (C$56) inNuova Systems Inc., a startup in Santa Clara, Calif., that’sdeveloping unspecified data center products. The deal gives Ciscoan 80 percent stake in Nuova, which will become a majority-ownedsubsidiary of the networking giant.
