Intelsat opens Rio office

Satellite telecommunication company Intelsat Ltd. opened its first regional service centre in Latin America last month, announcing the opening of a customer support and sales office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Operating as Intelsat Brasil Ltda., Intelsat’s Rio office will manage new business requests and customer needs in Brazil and Uruguay. Prior to the opening, Brazil and the region were served from Intelsat’s offices in Washington, D.C., said Jodi Evans, an Intelsat spokeswoman.

Intelsat’s largest operations in the region serve telephone carriers, but Internet services are the fastest growing part of the business, she said. One of Intelsat’s satellites began providing a 155Mbps (Mega bits per second) Internet connection between the United States and Brazil last year. About 14 per cent of the company’s revenue comes from Latin America. Intelsat operates a constellation of 21 geo-stationary earth orbit satellites.
