Informix to lay off nearly 500 employees

U.S. database and tools vendor Informix Corp. is to lay off nearly 500 employees, a spokesman for the company confirmed Thursday.

The staff cuts are largely due to the vendor’s restructuring plan unveiled late Wednesday, whereby Informix has condensed its five business areas into two units, the spokesman said.

“It’s all about growth, positioning the company for growth,” the spokesman for Informix, who declined to be identified, said. “It will enable Informix to better sell its products into the marketplace.”

After the job cuts, Informix’s total headcount will be in the order of 3,800 staff, down from its previous level of 4,300 employees. However, the vendor does plan to fill open slots in its sales and sales support operations, which will bring the total number of staff up to between 3,900 and 4,000 people, according to the spokesman for Informix.

As well as announcing its restructuring plans Wednesday, Informix also revealed it will take a third-quarter restructuring charge of between US$75 million and $90 million to support the move, followed by a further restructuring charge of between $10 million and $15 million during the first half of next year.
