IBM Corp. has unveiled a free voice portlet for transcribing telephony-based dictation. Called Transcription Portlet, the software lets remote users dial in to a portal using their cell phones and input information by voice.
For example, an appliance technician could dial in to the portlet, call up a customer service application and file a service report immediately after a service call, rather than returning to the office to file the information. The software converts the dictation into text. Transcription Portlet requires IBM’s WebSphere Voice Application Access, a platform for building voice portals. The new portlet is available for download from Big Blue’s alphaWorks site, where customers can get access to emerging technologies before they are licensed or integrated into products.
