IBM aims at SMBs with developerWorks toolkit

IBM Corp. is broadening its developerWorks Toolbox subscription service to give developers in small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) competitively priced access to its large suite of software products and technologies for building and testing new Web applications, it said Wednesday.

The developerWorks Toolbox service will now permit developers to build applications with WebSphere Studio and test them on a large range of IBM middleware products and technologies for a significantly reduced price, IBM said. Previously, developers could use these products for evaluation purposes only.

The Starter annual subscription package costs US$399, while the Professional package is priced at US$1,749 and Enterprise US$3,349.

IBM’s developerWorks is a toolkit that gives developers access to a comprehensive range of IBM products and technology resources to build, test, demonstrate and evaluate e-business applications based on open standards.

Products in the Toolbox subscription service include WebSphere Studio Site Developer at the Starter Level, WebSphere Studio Application Developer at the Professional Level, and both WebSphere Studio Application Developer Integration Edition and WebSphere Studio Enterprise Developer at the Enterprise Level.

IBM will offer separately purchasable technical support packages for selected WebSphere Studio products available via the developerWorks Toolbox subscription, it said. A new Toolbox subscription option allows subscribers to create custom CDs of IBM’s software.
