In addition to the new Ryzen chips, AMD announced two new Chromebooks processors at CES 2019. One of the first devices to feature them is the HP Chromebook 14, which is being demoed at CES 2019.
The new Chromebook 14 comes with 14″ 1,336 x 768 display, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB eMMC.
Ostensibly, the HP Chromebook 14 isn’t a mobile powerhouse, but at just $269 (USD), that’s completely within expectations. All Chromebooks come with a 100GB Google Drive subscription to help offset the anemic 32GB internal storage. HP states that the Chromebook 14 lasts for 9 hours and 15 minutes on a single charge.
Of course, the focus is on its new A4-9120C processor. The A4-9120C is part of the AMD’s processor announcement yesterday, but unlike the Ryzen 3000 series, it uses an older microarchitecture called Excavator, meaning that it isn’t as power efficient nor as fast as the Ryzen lineup.
Chromebooks have almost always used Intel or ARM processors, and out of the two, Intel’s low-powered segment is the dominant choice by far. AMD’s A6-9200C and A4-9120C are the company’s first competitors against Intel in the Chromebook space. It’s also likely that these chips are cheaper than the Intel chips, which translates to lower shelf prices or enable higher quality components in other areas of the system.
The HP Chromebook 14 will be available in Q1 2019.
