Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP), as a result of its acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp., plans to lay off 325 employees in the Netherlands and 1,100 in Germany, a company spokeswoman said Friday.
HP will eliminate 1,100 of the group’s 8,500 positions in Germany, the spokeswoman said. Slightly less than half of the cuts will be at Compaq, which employs around 2,600 people in the country, she said. HP has a workforce of around 5,900.
While HP plans to merge offices in cities with overlapping operations, the company will maintain a presence in all of its present locations, according to the spokeswoman.
The German subsidiaries of HP and Compaq will remain separate legal entities during the fiscal year ending Oct. 31, but will be managed by Heribert Schmitz, chairman of HP Germany, according to the spokeswoman.
The cuts in the Netherlands not only affect the local operations, but also the customer support centre in Amsterdam, the printer assembly facility in Amersfoort and the storage competence centre in Wijchen, which have European functions, HP said in a statement.
Earlier this month, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) said it will cut a total of 5,900 positions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa as it continues its restructuring efforts following the acquisition of Compaq.
The integration of HP and Compaq in the Netherlands should be complete by Nov. 1, HP said. The company currently employs 3,105 people in the Netherlands.
