HP packs server performance in small package

Responding to customer demand for low power consumption and better total cost of ownership from its servers, Hewlett-Packard Co. on Monday released the latest member of its ProLiant server family that the company says proves good things can come in small packages.

The HP ProLiant DL560 is a multi-processor server, combining the density and serviceability of the HP ProLiant DL380 two-processor server with the performance and reliability of the four-processor ProLiant DL580, the company said.

Offered in a 2U rack-mounted design, the DL560 uses approximately 50 per cent less rack space than similarly configured enterprise servers and is able to operate on a fully loaded system using less than 550 watts of power.

According to HP, the ProLiant DL560 is scalable to support a variety of enterprise applications such as mail and messaging, clustered applications and enterprise resource planning (ERP) and features support for 12GB of memory.

The server also features the Intel Xeon processor MP, PCI-X architecture, Wide Ultra SCSI, integrated Lights-Out processor and gigabit networking technology. With its modular design and component redundancy throughout the chassis, as well as online spare memory, the DL560 ensures availability of critical applications.

The latest addition is also supported by HP’s optional ProLiant Essentials Value Packs – introduced last year – including the Workload Management pack, which consolidates one- and two-processor ProLiant Servers, the Rapid Deployment pack, which lends services to dense server environments, as well as the Performance Management pack, which identifies and explains hardware bottlenecks for better system performance.

The HP ProLiant DL560 supports Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and the anticipated Windows Server 2003, in addition to Red Hat Linux Advanced Server, SuSe Linux and Novell NetWare. Available Tuesday, the DL560 starts at $11,326. For details, visit the company’s Canadian Web site at www.hp.ca.
