HP, BEA announce bundling deal

BEA Systems Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. announced on Monday a bundling agreement to combine application development and hardware optimization in order to better serve their enterprise customers, the companies said.

BEA’s WebLogic Server 7.0 Advantage Edition will be included with every HP-UX 11i system beginning later this month, according to the announcement. Current HP-UX 11i and 11.0 systems support contract customers will be able to access a six-month trial version of the J2EE Web application server at no charge.

The offering will assist customers who are seeking to develop and manage their businesses in real-time, the companies said.

“The bundling initiative is just the beginning of a strategic effort to combine application development and hardware optimization efforts in order to offer enterprise customers exceptional solutions,” said Tod Nielsen, chief marketing officer for BEA Systems, in a statement.

HP has set up services and consulting resources for the deployment of the Web server application on its operating system at solution centres around the world. Support for the Web application server will also be available through the BEA Web site.

HP also announced the release of its OpenView Transaction Analyzer that will provide customers with simplified and ongoing management of real-time transactions, the company said. The solution uses transaction management application program interfaces, co-developed with BEA, to monitor the WebLogic Server 6.X and 7.0. The solution has tag and trace capability that monitors for performance bottlenecks in both J2EE and Microsoft DNA application infrastructures by analyzing the actual path off all transactions and locating network or application problems.

Earlier this year, BEA announced plans to provide support for its product on all HP platforms, including NonStop Kernel, OpenVMS and Tru64 Unix, as well as Windows 2000 and Linux.
