Global One, a global provider of telecommunications services to large corporations, announced on Tuesday the opening of its first Internet hosting centre in Latin America. The centre will be located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and will provide a variety of services to companies interested in using the Internet for business.
Brazil is Latin America’s largest Internet and telecommunications market and Sao Paulo is Brazil’s most important city in terms of business.
The services include the hosting of IT, electronic messaging and groupware systems and Web sites, and the provision of Internet access, intranet and extranet services and security services to protect clients’ networks and systems, the company said. The centre cost US$8 million to build.
Global One already has four similar hosting centres – in Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Rennes, France – and plans to open six more by mid-2001 in Sydney, Paris, London, Miami, New York and Reston, Va., according to information on the company’s Web site.
Global One made the announcement about the Sao Paulo hosting centre at the Telexpo/Interexpo 2001 trade show being held this week in Sao Paulo.
Global One provides Internet, voice and data transmission services in over 70 countries and had revenue of US$1.1 billion in 1999. The company was formed in January 1996 as a joint venture between Deutsche Telekom AG, France Telecom SA and Sprint Corp. In January 2000, France Telecom became the company’s sole owner, but in November 2000 France Telecom bought a 54.3 per cent stake in Dutch carrier Equant and merged it with Global One, a deal still awaiting regulatory approval.
