Emerging standard for 4G peer-to-peer mobile location

Just when you thought LTE was the end of the wireless standards race comes a new entry from Qualcomm.
 
Called LTE Direct, it envisions mobile devices broadcasting brief spurts of user identifying data that would be recognized by other devices or retailers. In essence, it’s a location-services finding device that’s simpler than current technology.
 
However, carriers would have to surrender some spectrum to make it work. Why bother? Location-based services are another way carriers hope to get more revenue from subscribers. Read this and see if you’re convinced.
