EMC updates Centera archiving capabilities

EMC Corp. has announced new software that can double the amount of digital objects – such as images, e-mails, audio and video files – that its Centera storage system can archive.

To keep up with the modern business environment, the Hopkinton, Mass.-based company said its newest version of the Centera operating system, CentraStar 4.0, can hold up to 25 million objects of data on its 500 or 750 gigabyte storage drives. This is particularly useful, according to EMC, for managing large qualities of small objects.

EMC cited a recent IDC white paper which indicates that the number of electronic information “containers,” including small files such as images, packets, and tags, is growing 50 per cent faster than the number of gigabytes available. With its new software, which is available as a free upgrade, the company said it will address this and estimated that the self-management and healing capabilities of Centera systems will increase by about 25 per cent over previous incarnations.
