Users of EMC’s NetWorker family of backup and recovery solutions will soon have an easier way to add de-duplication and continuous data protection to their systems.
The company said Monday that it will integrate its Avamar de-dupe and RecoverPoint CDP software into NetWorker’s Management Console, starting with the release of NetWorker 7.4 in December. As a result, network managers won’t need three separate consoles running are using all of these applications.
“This allows new and existing NetWorker users to add these technologies in a faster and easier way because of the integration with the product they use as their primary backup and recovery,” said Ron Emsley, EMC’s senior director of product marketing.
Emsley said the integration is significant because NetWorker is the “centre of our next generation backup strategy.” Avamar servers will show up as de-dupe nodes in the NetWorker tree, while RecoverPoint modules will appear in NetWorker’s configuration window.
Emsley estimates there are 25,000 NetWorker customers around the world. NetWorker is sold with a number of modules for applications, including SQL Server, DB2, Exchange, Notes/Domino, Oracle and SAP R/3 on Oracle.
The moves integrate products from companies EMC bought in 2006. Avamar Technologies, an Irvine, Calif. company which specialized in source-based de-duplication — storing only changes to original data — was purchased almost exactly a year ago, while RecoverPoint came out of the purchase in May, 2006 of Kashya.
Avamar comes in several versions, including standalone software priced at US$17,000 per terabyte of storage, US$35,000 for a software/hardware combo and Avamar Virtual Edition for running on VMWare. RecoverPoint is a priced per terabyte of capacity.
EMC also announced changes to several other products as well.
Next month the EMC Disk Library will have a model, the DL4000, which will support 1TB SATA II hard drives and RAID 6, which provides fault tolerance from any two failed drives. Also available is an optional data compression card, which comes standard with the DL6000.
EMC also announced Backup Advisor 3.0, a monitoring, alert an analysis tool for heterogeneous environments, now supports CommVault Galaxy, CA ArcServe, Symantec PureDisk, Network Appliance VTL, Windows Vista and 64-bit Linux.
Finally, it will release in December an SMB version of Homebase 6.0., server recovery and migration software EMC acquired five months ago. Homebase/SE is for environments with up to 30 servers, will cost approximately US$4,000.
