Elvis Presley fans have another chance to get their hands on some meaningful memorabilia through an eBay auction.
One of the King’s pearly whites, as well as a lock of his hair were put on the online auction block last month, according to the Associated Press (AP). Apparently selling the tooth, the hair and a gold record as a package was just too expensive, so the items have been separated to make them more affordable, and are being auctioned off again, the report said. The original bidding on the items started at US$100,000, and shot up to US$2 million in only a few days, AP reported. Those bids weren’t believed to be serious, so the auction had to be reset once before the first closing date of July 18.
Some of the more bizarre bids in the first auction included one from an anonymous European firm that wanted to extract DNA from the tooth for cloning purposes. But the owner of the tooth insisted that replication would never work, adding that there will only ever be one Elvis.
The tooth, said to have been pulled out of Elvis’ mouth at the dentist’s office, has been on display for about 10 years at the Yellow Strawberry hair salon in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
In the past, the salon has displayed John Lennon’s hair, locks from Marilyn Monroe’s and George Washington’s heads, and a suit that belonged to Jack Ruby, the man who shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald, John F. Kennedy’s assassin. They have also exhibited one of Chicago mobster Al Capone’s favourite barber chairs, AP reported.
