Dell follows Ottawa layoffs by closing Edmonton centre

Dell’s corporate axe swung at Canada for the second time this week, when the company followed up layoffs at its Ottawa location with the closure of its Edmonton contact centre.

More than 900 employees will be affected and offered other jobs within Dell or severance and career placement services, the company said Wednesday. Customer support will be consolidated in other existing Dell locations, execs added in a statement.

Dell already pulled back on plans to double the size of its Ottawa contact centre earlier this week, making an unspecified number of job cuts and leaving a new facility empty. The company is working on an overall reduction of its workforce by about 10 per cent.

The Edmonton contact centre was opened four years ago. Dell’s remaining 25 contact centres include locations in Germany, India and the Philippines, among other areas.
