Computer Associates slashes jobs, creates new division

Computer Associates International Inc. slashed 450 jobs Tuesday as it heralded the formation of its new Technology Services organization, which the company says will improve customer service and increase time to delivery for its customers.

While over half of the 450 job cuts will be in North America, CA remained tight-lipped about specifically where the layoffs would take place. In Canada, Computer Associates has offices in Mississauga, Ont., Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver and Quebec City.

CA says the cutbacks started Tuesday, and affected employees will receive severance packages including the continuation of benefits and outplacement services.

However, despite these cutbacks, CA says the creation of its Technology Services organization will enable it to better serve its customers. The new division combines CA’s pre-sales and technical professional services organization. The pre-sales team aided prospective customers in evaluating CA’s technology while the professional services branch aided customers in implementation.

“From our perspective it’s a very positive change for our customers,” said Una O’Neill, senior vice-president and general manager of the Technology Services division, in Islandia, N.Y. “The biggest impact is providing technical continuity from the pre-sale to the post-sale. So essentially that’s from the product evaluation period to the implementation of the product.”

Providing better accountability and a shortened delivery cycle will also be customer benefits resulting from this new division, O’Neill said.
