Compaq Computer Corporation has announced that the iPAQ Pocket PC continues to fuel the company’s next generation of Internet access with nearly half a million units shipped in the second quarter, giving Compaq a commanding lead in the Windows CE market, according to Gartner Dataquest preliminary second quarter 2001 estimates.
Industry analysts confirm the iPAQ Pocket PC’s continuing appeal, particularly among business customers. “A growing number of new users and users who are upgrading want better messaging capabilities, such as access to e-mail, short message services, wireless LAN or integration of a PDA with a mobile phone,” Todd Kort, principal analyst of Gartner Dataquest’s Computing Platform Worldwide group. “Our projected numbers indicate the iPAQ Pocket PC overtook Palm in terms of revenue for the second quarter. We believe this is largely due to the product’s appeal to corporate users because of its better connectivity with Microsoft programs like Outlook, Word and Excel, supplemented by its extremely strong multimedia and gaming capabilities.”
Clustra partners with Siemens to enhance wireless services
Clustra Systems Inc. has announced that the Siemens group Information and Communication Mobile (IC Mobile) has signed an OEM partnership agreement to license the Clustra Database.
Siemens IC Mobile will use the high-availability Clustra Database to meet the mission-critical data management requirements in its next-generation Home Location Register (HLR) product, an off-switch subscriber database that will improve carriers’ ability to provide roaming and a variety of enhanced services to mobile phone and wireless device users wherever they are without interruption. AirIQ to merge with eDispatch
AirIQ Inc., a wireless application service provider specializing in mobile asset management solutions, recently announced an agreement to merge with eDispatch.com Wireless Data Inc., a wireless application service provider specializing in mobile workforce management solutions.
Pickering, Ont.-based AirIQ developed and markets a location information service for the efficient management of mobile assets, including the location and tracking of commercial transport fleets and rental vehicles. Vancouver-based eDispatch developed and markets a technologically advanced dispatch product for the efficient management of mobile workforces. Together, the companies will offer a broader range of complementary solutions and linked services with the goal of becoming a world leader in mobile resource management.
