Compaq has upgraded the Armada M700, M300 and E500 model notebooks. The M700 model comes with a 750MHz Intel Mobile Pentium III processor with SpeedStep technology, Compaq said. The prior model ran a 700MHz Intel Mobile Pentium III processor. SpeedStep technology allows the notebook to work at 700MHz if connected to the AC adapter, but it will allow it to clock down to about 600MHz if running on battery to conserve power. Compaq developed the new M700 in two models, one that runs Windows 95 and 98 and another that runs Windows NT and 2000. One can buy the M700 that includes a 14-inch display, 64M bytes of RAM, 12G-byte hard drive, a 56.6K modem and either Windows 95 and 98 for US$3,999. A similar version that comes with 128M bytes of RAM and runs Windows NT and 2000 can be purchased for US$4,299. The new M300 model comes with a 12-inch display, bumped up a bit from the current 11.3 inch. Its weight increases to 3.5 lbs (1.58 kilograms) from the older model at 3.2 lbs (1.44 kilograms), Compaq said. The M300 runs on a 600MHz Intel Mobile Pentium III processor, moving up from a 500MHz processor. The new processor comes with SpeedStep technology. An M300 that runs on Windows NT or 2000 with 64M bytes of RAM and a 12G-byte hard drive will cost US$2,899, Brennan said. A model with an 11.3-inch display is available for US$2,599. The E500 comes with Intel Mobile Celeron and Intel Mobile Pentium III processors with SpeedStep Technology. New models come with 15-inch screens, compared to the former 14.1 inches.
