CIOs get eight green computing tips for 2008

CIOs can help extend the life of existing computing facilities while reducing the environmental impact of technology by following these eight tips this coming year, said Plano, Texas-based information technology provider EDS Corp.

Topping the list is the need to virtualize servers by eliminating the “one application, one server” approach.

Remaining tips include turning of unused servers; employing power saving techniques like running servers at reduced speeds; optimizing applications by pruning inefficient software; performing rigorous maintenance to ensure peak efficiency of systems; moving to higher-density, multi-core CPUs; paying more attention to infrastructure operations; and, cash in on being green.
