Gary Daichendt resigned as president and chief operating officer of Nortel Networks Corp. on Friday, after falling out with Chief Executive Officer Bill Owens.
Chief Technology Officer Gary Kunis was caught in the crossfire and will also leave the company. Kunis had worked with Daichendt during their time at Cisco Systems Inc. Daichendt made a major contribution to Nortel’s business, Owens said in a prepared statement. “It has become apparent to Gary and me, however, that we have divergent management styles and our business views differ,” Owens said.
For his part, Daichendt said making the decision to leave was a difficult one.
Owens will take on Daichendt’s responsibilities as president and chief operating officer of Nortel Networks Corp. and Nortel Networks Ltd., which are based in Brampton, Ontario.
It’s barely a year since Owens took control of the company, after his predecessor was fired following an accounting scandal.
The company was forced to restate several years’ financial results as a consequence of that scandal, and has only just returned to timely reporting of its quarterly results.
