Lucent Technologies Inc. this week unveiled a low-end addition to its ATM integrated access devices that provides access aggregation, voice over DSL and IP service delivery for enterprises. The PacketStar (PSAX) 1000 Multiservice Media Gateway is targeted at global service providers looking to penetrate the multi-tenant unit (MTU) and wireless backhaul markets. The MTU market alone is expected to grow to US$6.6 billion this year, Lucent says. The PSAX 1000 is a two rack unit high switch designed to enable service providers to offer enterprises IP VPNs, managed voice, native ATM and frame relay services. For mobile operators, the PSAX 1000 can reduce recurring expenses on T-1/E-1 and T-3/E-3 wireless backhaul costs by concentrating T-1 and E-1 private lines into a single ATM link. This can save operators as much as 47 per cent in operational costs, Lucent claims. The PSAX 1000 costs US$15,000 and is available now. It is the third member of Lucent’s PSAX line of ATM IADs, which also includes the PSAX 1250 and 2300.

Almost half of workers south of the border rely on a cell phone, pager or PDA, according to a recent report from Cahners In-Stat Group. The number of wireless users is expected to climb from 47 per cent in 2001 to 60 per cent by 2004. The report, “All business is eBusiness: Demand for mobile solutions & communications expenditures in the small, SOHO, middle and enterprise markets,” found that small firms lead the way in wireless adoption.
