Fluke Networks in Everett, Wash., announced the availability of LAN MapShot Diagramming Software version 1.5, which works with Microsoft Visio to automatically create maps of switched Ethernet networks. The new release features improved discovery algorithms that are capable of handling larger networks consisting of 75 switches and 2,000 nodes with more accuracy, according to a press release issued by the company. LAN MapShot 1.5 also features customized maps which show network managers and administrators all network switches and all devices of any designated type. (For example, a server map would show all the servers in the broadcast domain.) A free, 14-day trial version of the product is available for download from www.flukenetworks.com/lanmapshot, where users can also partake in live chats about the products. The product is available through February for US$399, and will be US$499 after February 28. Exisiting customers can upgrade for US$79.95.

Cisco Systems Inc. last month announced new versions of several products, including its VPN Client software and VPN 3002 Hardware Client. As well, it announced new embedded hardware-based VPN acceleration in the Cisco PIX 525 and 535 Firewall family. The Cisco VPN Client software includes new integrated personal firewall functionality, allowing users to have embedded end-point security support for remote access VPNs, the company said. The PIX Firewall family enhancements enable the firewalls to offer VPN functionality combined with perimeter security for VPN and security deployments, according to Cisco. The Cisco VPN Client version 3.5 software is now available for all compliant Cisco Remote Access VPN devices, including the VPN 3000 Concentrator and VPN 3002 Hardware Client for no additional charge, according to a statement. Cisco’s PIX 525, with embedded VPN acceleration, is available for approximately $34,540, and the PIX 535 is available for approximately $92,630.
