Boeing spinoff enters antispam fray

Another player has emerged in the fight to prevent unwanted e-mail and spam from hitting networks in the form of MessageGate Inc. The new company was spun off from Boeing Co., which internally developed the messaging security and compliance technology that MessageGate plans to sell.

Its flagship product, MessageGate Security Edition, is targeted at enterprise customers and provides protection for enterprise e-mail systems by filtering and securing inbound, outbound and internal e-mail from unwanted content, including pornography and malicious content. The product is installed at the corporate perimeter, and is aimed at reducing the large volume of unwanted e-mail from entering the corporate network while improving e-mail security, the company said.

In addition to its initial offering, the company is also preparing for the launch of its Compliance Edition and plans to deliver a family of enterprise security solutions.

MessageGate’s Security Edition is available in Canada but pricing for the product was not available at press time.

MessageGate is entering a market that is cluttered with vendors already offering similar products, including Network Associates Inc.’s McAfee SpamKiller, Novell Inc.’s GroupWise 6.5 Client and Symantec Corp.’s AntiVirus Gateway.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based MessageGate received funding from Polaris Venture Partners, with Boeing Ventures and Northwest Venture Associates also holding an equity stake. MessageGate was established through Boeing’s Chairman’s Innovation Initiative, which provides employees an opportunity to develop new business ideas, technologies and processes. The company is online at www.messagegate.com.
