Australian management school inks wireless deal with Nortel

The Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM has signed an agreement with the Australian division of Nortel to drive joint training and marketing activities for wireless network technology in Australia over the next three years.

The agreement will see the deployment of a Nortel wireless network at MGSM’s North Ryde and CBD campuses, which will give teaching staff and students an improved level of network access without having to reply on a physical network connection.

Nortel will also gain access to a number of certified MGSM courses, and will be recognized as MGSM’s official technology partner.

MGSM Dean, Professor Roy Green, said the agreement goes well beyond the introduction of new technology.

“Over the next few years we can expect to further enhance the quality and relevance of our teaching material by marrying the technology with practical input from a global communications leader like Nortel,” he said.

“By linking ‘real world’ experience with the most current management theories and principles from around the globe, MGSM provides executives with a learning experience that transcends the traditional boundaries of a business school.”

Nortel Australia/New Zealand managing director, Mark Stevens, said an era of hyperconnectivity is on its way, where the number of devices connected to networks is outpacing the number of people connected.

He said it is critical that skills on managing this megatrend in communications be taught at the earliest stage of leadership training.

“There’s a natural synergy between MGSM’s focus on leadership in management education and Nortel’s focus on leadership in delivering enterprise communications solutions,” Stevens said.

The Nortel wireless network will integrate with MGSM’s current infrastructure and enable students, guests and staff to communicate and collaborate more effectively regardless of their location on campus.

A centralized network management console will also give staff more control over the administration of the network across both sites.

Implemented by Nortel nPower partner 3D Networks, the solution includes a complete portfolio of Nortel’s wireless access products, including Nortel Wireless LAN Security Switch 2361s, Nortel Wireless LAN Access Point 2330s, and the Nortel Wireless LAN Management System.

Established as part of Macquarie University in 1969, MGSM operates campuses in Macquarie Park in North Ryde, Sydney CBD, Singapore and Hong Kong.
