IBM and Nokia collaborate to launch private 5G service

IBM and Nokia announced at Mobile World Congress 2023 that they will collaborate on a “seamless, simplified” private 5G managed service using IBM Cloud Satellite.

On what each partner will bring to the table, Nokia will bring expertise in 5G networks and private wireless, while IBM will bring use case-driven cross-industry knowledge and experience in automation, artificial intelligence, and hybrid cloud. The companies see their collaboration as a natural next step in their collaboration as businesses accelerate their digital transformation and continue to place a premium on network connectivity.

IBM also stated that as clients innovate at the edge, its Cloud Satellite solution can provide improved resiliency, performance, security, and compliance. Furthermore, the two companies intend to investigate ways to enable service providers to use a unified management stack to design, automatically build, instantly connect, operate, and observe their private 5G environments.

IBM stated that it saw a significant opportunity in the new partnership with Nokia, addressing the needs of large enterprises first and in a more focused manner than the large cloud providers are currently doing.

For enterprise customers, the new offering will be a private 5G managed service on IBM Cloud Satellite. Nokia will handle the private wireless side with its 5G Cloud RAN, while IBM will contribute expertise in automation, artificial intelligence, and hybrid cloud. The strategy is to provide clients building connectivity at the edge with enhanced resiliency, performance, security, and compliance capabilities.
