Will Symantec’s CEO join Barack Obama’s cabinet?

The hot rumour coming out of the CA World conference here in Las Vegas is that departing Symantec CEO John W. Thompson is going to be asked by President-elect Barack Obama to join his cabinet in some role.

Thompson was one of many Silicon Valley executives to back Obama during the U.S. presidential campaign. Possible posts for Thompson are Commerce Secretary and Chief Technology Officer.

Thompson did participate in the CEO’s for Vote Hour along with other high tech CEOs such as Intel’s Paul Otellini and Cisco’s John Chambers. The video just encourages people to go and vote for any candidate.

Another possible IT executive to join Obama’s cabinet is Anne Mulcahy of Xerox. But again, both are just rumours right now.

One quick hit before I go. BlueStar, a POS and RFID solution provider, has promoted Bill Nix to the position of Vice President of Global Distribution.
