SMC spins off enterprise unit

SMC Networks Inc., which known for targetting the home and small office markets, has renamed its enterprise unit Edgecore Networks Inc.

Edgecore, like SMC, will be a subsidiary of Taipei-based Accton technology Corp.

Irvine, Calif.-based SMC said it decided on a new name because some customers were confused by the company’s brands. What is now Edgecore was called the business solution group in the past, though Edgecore was the brand the company used in Brazil, Russia, India and China.

SMC's product line includes the TigerStack II 1000 Stackable Managed Layer 3 switches, announced last August.

The switches are available with either 24 or 48 10/100/1000BASE-T ports.

The firm said Monday it has been selling WiMAX hardware overseas but not in the U.S. However, it plans to launch new wireless products in the U.S. during the second quarter of next year.
