There are a few Android phones out there, but Samsung is the first major handset vendor to test the Android waters – and the wrath of the telco operators.

Samsung's New I7500 Google Android Phone
Register Hardware reportsthat the phone itself measures 115 x 56 x 11.9mm, sport a big 3.2“AMOLED display, and ship with 8GB of memory — not enough? The handsetwill accomodate MicroSD cards of up to 32GB in size, for a total of40GB storage. Other killer features include 7.2 MBps HSDPA,WIFi connectivity and a gaggle of Google Mobile services andapplications, not to mention a web browser that is rumoured to delivera blistering browsing experience. This handset could significantly“raise the bar” from what we typically have been “conditioned” toaccept from the mobile web surfing experience to-date.

Google Means Business With Android
O2 Germanyofficially announced (note this link comes up German, but you can change the language via the right nav bar) that the Android phone should be available in June. Interesting that it highlights these 3 features:
– Samsung I7500 with 5 megapixel camera and brilliant touch display
– Simple and intuitive use
– Access to Google Mail, Google Maps and the Android market with one click
The question everyone (including myself) — and perhaps excludingthose lucky Germans — will be asking is when can “I” possbly get myhands on this? Well, I had to do some digging and InfoSync appears tobe one of the few to have included broader coverage of those details:
“The Samsung i7500 will be available in major Europeancountries from June 2009. It supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz voicenetworks, as well as 900/1700/2100 MHz data networks. The 1700 MHzfrequency will let T-Mobile USA users buy this phone unlocked and useit on T-Mobile’s new 3G network. There’s no word about whether T-MobileUSA will pick up and subsidize the Samsung i7500 Android smartphone.” via InfoSyncWorld.com
I am sure here in Canada, once current Rogers customers shake thecobwebs out of their heads from the weekend, and get wind of thishandset, the blogosphere will be a buzz with rumour and discussionabout the best way to get an unlocked version of these puppies. TheHandset market is hot, hot, hot! Great news for consumers – the Iphone Killersare circling like vultures. And it seems like the consumers are“standing by” to pick through the aftermath. Who will be left standingat the top of the smart phone segment once we near the Christmasseason? We’ve got about 6 months for that battle to play out…
Anyone want some popcorn? Should be quite the ride.
