Motorola unveils RFID readers

Motorola Inc. has announced radiofrequency identification readers designed to read both one- and two-dimensional bar codes, and a ruggedized scanner that can read bar codes from 12 metres.

The DS9808-R, designed for both handheld and hands-free scanning, is designed for checkout, price checking, inventory identification and for processing returns. It lets retailers translate electronic product code (EPC) tag data to Universal Product Code (UPC) data.

It also reads PDF417 symbols and lets retailers set up their point of sale systems so you can read bar codes and images from mobile phone displays.

Motorola is also shipping MC9090-G RFID ER, and extended range scanner that lets users read bar cords from a distance of up to 12 metres, or 40 feet. That scanner is designed more for warehouses, loading docks and outside buildings.

Both the DS9808-R and MC9090-G RFID ER are scheduled to ship before July.
