FusionIO makes the PC part I want but can’t have

I've been a bit obsessed with SSD technology for a while now. The idea of having a hard drive that's as stable and reliable as flash memory is just too amazing to consider.

But, as with all new technologies, it is taking a supremely long time for the cost to come down (and the technology to catch up to spinning disks).

And while I'd like to tell you the cost has reached a point where my next computer will be fitted with only SSD drives, I can't. What I can tell you is that FusionIO is getting dangerously close to getting the technology there, even if the price isn't.

The ioFX is a 420GB SSD drive that reads at 1.4GB/s(!) and writes at 700MB/s.

But…it also costs around US$2500. So, if you're the type of person who can sacrifice that kind of cash on top of a computer purchase (unlike me where that is more than I paid in total for my last computer) you're in luck! FusionIO has made SSD affordable (for some).

Either way this is great to see as it shows innovations in SSD are slowly but surely impacting computing and not just mobile devices.
