Veritas offers up a new back-up

In a pantheon of data storage and protection solutions, Veritas Software Corp. recently unveiled Veritas NetBackup 4.5 and NetBackup Storage Migrator, solutions the Mountain View, Calif.-based company says have been “significantly upgraded” to enable companies to do back-up with less impact on application uptime while reducing server-based resource use.

NetBackup 4.5 latest features include expanded back-up and recovery of Oracle databases, advanced disaster recovery automation, and extended data migration, Veritas said. NetBackup Storage Migrator moves less-used data to less expensive storage devices, the company noted, adding the storage management solution also features enhanced reporting, wizard-driven menus, and improved integration with Veritas software data protection.

“Some of things we’ve added, particularly for the larger enterprise, are things like snapshot back-ups and off-host back-ups – also certainly since the events of last September (11), we’ve added a lot of things in the disaster environment,” said Craig Andrews, Veritas’s Canadian technical director.

“Not only are (companies) looking for products that are high performance and able to back-up large amounts of data, but also for new and innovative ways of being able to back-ups that remove the back-up window – and that’s some of the things we’ve added to enable that,” Andrews continued. “We try to support everybody’s platform and I think that is a big plus for our customer base.”

End user Gerrit Bos, computing and communication services senior analyst at University of Guelph in Ont. agreed, adding that the strongest appeal for Veritas is the ‘one-size-fits-all’ versatility. Bos said the products lend well to the University’s heterogeneous data storage environment.

“As an institutional back-up solution, it’s able to handle the wide variety of clients…the fact that it can do all of them reliably is a very important characteristic for us,” Bos said. ” We are a university and our financial and student information systems are our flagship services – minimizing downtime during back-ups and restoring as fast as you can is an important consideration.”

When it comes to the enterprise, reducing data management costs should be a top priority, noted Ray Paquet, vice-president and research director at Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Inc.

“With system downtime for a highly automated company costing millions of dollars an hour…(companies) are facing the increased pressures of managing rapidly increasing amounts of data width smaller budgets and fewer personnel,” Paquet said, adding that back-up and recovery solutions like NetBackup and Storage Migrator reduce the total cost of systems ownership.

Available now, pricing for Veritas NetBackup 4.5 starts at US$5,000 (Windows) and US$10,000 (UNIX); Veritas NetBackup Storage Migrator for UNIX v4.5 starts at US$15,000. Veritas can be found at http://www.veritas.com.
