Unified Modeling Language upgrade proceeds

The UML (Unified Modeling Language) standard would be fitted with a modeling library for implementing tools, under a plan to be submitted to the Object Management Group on Wednesday.

UML is a specification for constructing, documenting, and visualizing software systems.

U2 Partners, a consortium of vendors that has been working on the upcoming version 2.0 of UML, plans to submit a technology called UML Infrastructure Library, which is designed to make Model Driven Architecture Tools more efficient to implement and integrate with each other, according to a spokesperson for U2 Partners. The proposal is to be submitted at the OMG’s meeting in Orlando, Fla.

UML 2.0 is being developed in phases to cover areas such as language infrastructure, diagramming, and low-level language details, said Matt Graney, product marketing manager for San Jose, Calif.-based tools vendor TeleLogic AB, which is participating in U2 Partners.

Version 2.0 addresses deficiencies in the initial iteration of UML, which has been around since 1997, Graney said. UML 2.0 is intended to make it easier to develop complex software systems, he said.

“The size of the software systems that are being built are just enormous today and as a result, engineers and software [designers] need a way to manage complexity,” Graney said.

UML enables developers to have a common understanding of problems to be solved as well as implementations and solutions, said Graney.

Version 2.0 is to be completed this year, he said.
