Sprint PCS joins Java bandwagon

Sprint PCS Group has joined the Java bandwagon, announcing an application developers’ program in conjunction with Sun Microsystems Inc. and support for Java on a Samsung Electronics handset running Palm OS.

Sprint PCS will start shipping the i300 handset from Samsung with Java support by the end of September. Sprint PCS already offers handsets from Kyocera Corp. that can run Java applications. Nextel Communications Inc., NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Nokia Corp. also support Java-enabled phones.

CocoBase designed to reduce need for hand coding

THOUGHT Inc., an object to relational (O/R) mapping technology company, has announced the integration of CocoBase Enterprise O/R with UML/XMI TM Compatible Modeling Tools. CocoBase can import model information into its O/R maps and link definitions or descriptors. Developers can now extend their modeling tools’ functionality to include CocoBase’s dynamic, object-to-rational database persistence. CocoBase can turn UML/XMI TM Models into persistence maps, generate a complete range of abstract Java classes, EJB components and greatly simplify the complex process of mapping and persisting relational data.

CocoBase is designed to boost productivity by eliminating the need to hand-code or hand-maintain database access for CMP, BMP Entity beans, Session Beans, JSPs and Java Classes, decreasing development time by as much as 85 per cent, according to the company.

HP launches developer’s kit for printers

Hewlett-Packard has announced a Chai-based software developer kit (SDK) that allows developers to create e-services for Web-enabled HP printers. To help developers create and test embedded Java applications, the LaserJet Chai SDK will include HP ChaiServer software, tools, documentation, online tutorials and program examples. The LaserJet Chai SDK, which was to be released on Sept. 21 will be available through the Print and Image community on HP’s embedded software developer portal site: devnet.hp.com.

The HP LaserJet Chai SDK was developed to assist third-party developers in the creation of Web-enabled applications for HP monochrome and colour LaserJet printers.

IBM, Microsoft working on better access to more data

IBM Corp. and Microsoft Corp. are working to pull BI (business intelligence) and knowledge management under a single umbrella, with the goal of providing a new generation of BI that includes both structured and unstructured data. The end result, the companies say, is to give users better access to more of their data.

IBM’s research arm is at work on software that will make all the information in an enterprise available to employees, according to Anan Jhingran, head of computer science at IBM’s Almaden, Calif., research labs. The new model takes structured and unstructured data, analyzes it, and correlates it, he said. “Unstructured and structured data are not islands, and we need to bring them together to actually derive useful knowledge,” Jhingran added. “In the future no data type or source of data will be an island.”

Empirix puts EJB apps to the test

Empirix Inc. has announced the latest release of Bean-test. Providing extended testing capabilities, Bean-test 4.0 is designed to ease and expand the testing of Enterprise JavaBeans applications. As a result, developers and organizations using Enterprise JavaBeans might be able to more easily improve the efficiency, quality and the cost effectiveness of development projects while building innovative enterprise applications, according to Empririx.

A recent Gartner study reported, “The market for application servers and J2EE-related tools is expected to grow to US$1 billion this year.” As more and more companies embrace EJBs as core components of their enterprise applications, they will require a reliable testing tool that allows them to quickly and easily test their applications throughout the development process.
