Shipper uses wireless technology to track cargo

Korean shipping company PNL Networks Co. Ltd. is using the SaviTrak service and wireless technology to monitor its cargo. SaviTrak processes data feeds from wireless monitoring services on the location and status of items.

PNL, which ships electronics, telecommunications, automotive and consumer products, chose SaviTrak to address security concerns and to be able to share information with customers, Customs officials and other government departments.

It uses a variety of wireless technologies, including global positioning system (GPS) satellite service and radiofrequency identification (RFID).

SaviTrak is provided by Savi Networks LLC, a joint venture between Mountain View, Calif.-based Savi Technology Inc. and Hutchison Port Holdings. Savi Technology, a division of airplane and weapons maker Lockheed Martin, manufactures active RFID tags and readers.
