Companies claim streaming video breakthrough

Digital image processing equipment makers Snell & Wilcox Ltd. and Equator Technologies Inc. have teamed up to develop a streaming-video technology that they say is the first to deliver better-than-VHS image quality at bandwidths of less than one M bps (bits per second).

The companies announced the product in a statement Thursday, timed to coincide with the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam.

The product will allow broadband system operators to offer video programming via a set-top box at half the bandwidth of competing technologies, the companies said, meaning more choice and higher quality for consumers. They added that the technology would for the first time enable “quality video” over existing ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) links.
