Cisco revamps security appliances

Cisco Systems Inc. on Monday announced additions to its family of security appliances, which incorporate new performance levels for broadband environments, midrange models and government and industry certifications to enable customers to protect their security investments.

According to San Jose-based Cisco, the additions to its PIX line – multi-layered devices that integrate network security devices and services, firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection protection and voice security – address customer demands from the SOHO market up to the high-capacity enterprise.

The Cisco PIX 501-Unlimited model enables unlimited user connections and, along with the PIX 506E, delivers integrated security of converged data, voice and video instalments in one solution designed for the remote worker.

The PIX 515E and 525 models take a modular approach, the company said. The 515E includes six ports of Fast Ethernet as well as 190Mbps firewall and 140Mbps VPN and is designed for server environments requiring physical network separation. The PIX 525 offers integrated dual gigabit Ethernet and dual Fast Ethernet ports in a turnkey solution. The 525 and 515E start at under US$10,000 for a complete, two-system redundant solution.

In the enterprise segment, the company has introduced the PIX 535 along with the Cisco Catalyst 6500 series, which offers modular, multi-gigabit protection for high-bandwidth environments. The 535 is equipped with 1.7Gbps of firewall throughput and 440Mbps of Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) and starts at less that US$50,000. The Catalyst 6500 series offers five to 20Gbps of scalable firewall protection with IP Security (IPSec) VPN, an intrusion detection system, in addition to a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) upgrade options. The Catalyst security systems also enable LAN/WAN integration.
