Mississauga, Ont.-based 01 Communique Laboratory Inc. this month unveiled the beta release of its next generation remote access service, I’m In Touch. According to the company, the service enables users to access information from their PCs through any Web-enabled device. The new version features integration with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, so users can write, send and read e-mail on their PCs or networked drives. The beta download will run on any Windows 9x, NT or higher computer according to the company, and can be found at www.imintouch.net. The company is on the Web at www.01com.com.

WatchGuard Technologies Inc. has announced that its Firebox III 700, 1000, 2500 and 4500 VPN appliances now include McAfee antivirus software. Users who purchase any of those models will receive five PC licenses for McAfee’s VirusScan AsaP software at no extra charge. Also bundled in is a copy of WatchGuard’s VPN Manager software. WatchGuard already gave users a 1-year subscription to its LiveSecurity service that sends users updated Firebox software, alerts from a WatchGuard team about Internet threats as they occur, virus alerts, educational articles, periodic management tips and a help desk. LiveSecurity now also includes 1 year of updates to McAfee’s antivirus software. The value of these add-ons comes to between US$1,432 and US$2,150, depending on the model of Firebox III. Hewlett-Packard Co. recently revamped its Internet-based Netaction software to help users more quickly integrate, develop and deploy Web-based applications. The company rolled out Netaction Application Server 8.0, which HP obtained from Bluestone Software Inc. last year. Version 8.0 will make it easier to customize e-commerce applications. The server upgrade features a portal framework that will let users build customized portals for business-to-employee internal networks and business-to-business service networks from a variety of data sources. The software supports Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition 1.3. Pricing for the application server was not available at press time.
